Studio Time 7 – ”Happy Birthday” (learn mixed media art tutorial)

by | Blog - Tutorials | 14 comments

My birthday is coming up in a few days so I’ve decided to celebrate with a new art journal page…
For you and me of course 🙂

Had no idea what to do when I started but things slowly seem to fall into place and I got in the groove…
I started by painting my background with acrylics then added some shine with pearlescent acrylic inks.
I stamped some gorgeous roses with a new stamp set I just purchased and proceeded to add some lovely colours to them.
Doodling with a white pen really brought them to life and I am so happy with my funky flowers, I think I’ll be re-using them!
A beautiful quote filled the main space without being overpowering…
And some birthday related stamped images (a bird, not really birthday but he fits right in anyway!), a delicious cupcake and a cheery banner added some fun finishes touches…

Happy birthday to me, and to you if applicable!

Did you enjoy this? Was this a good way to learn mixed media art?
Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Mimi.

Supplies used:
– acrylic paint: Liquitex Basics in deep violet, medium magenta, brilliant yellow green, light blue permanent, brilliant purple + Reeves prussian blue hue, white

– black Posca pen
– 3D rose stamp set by Viva Decor

Watch the process as I create happiness in my art journal 😉

  1. I love the colours you use in all your paintings, and I really love this one. I got your book today and have had a flick through. It looks really inspiring, so I’m looking forward to doing the tutorials. I’m going to show it to my friend too, as I think it might help her, as she gets frightened she’ll do something “wrong”, so it stops her from even starting.

Thanks so much for getting my book Julia! And I know your friend will find the help and confidence she needs as well, maybe you can even do the projects together 🙂 I can’t wait to see what you two create, please share in the FB group 😉 xx

  2. Just love this gift to yourself. “small touches of quirky with bold messiness” well said Peg. This is a new journey for me and hope one day to get to that point.

  4. Hi, I’ve just watched your birthday video and your paints always seem so shiny and glossy…how does this happen? I use Semco brand from spotlight and they appear very flat. What you do is very beautiful.

Hi Keryn, Thank you! I haven’t used Semco but I have a feeling it is craft paint so very matt. Check out Lincraft for Liquitex Basics which is the brand I use the most these days 🙂

  5. What a lovely Bday tribute! Happy Birthday to you:) I enjoy every single one of your videos! You are an inspiring lady with your talent as well as your great personality that makes me smile each time I see you (I even giggle with you). Loved your comment while you were stamping the adorable birdie. I have the same issue with really liking polar opposite styles and wish to figure a way to in cooperate them some how! You did it brilliantly here!Maybe the key to it is small touches of quirky with bold messiness? But I also love my Steampunk styling…hmmm. lol.Thank you for your generosity.I signed up for your book, can’t wait for the release!!!

Hi Peg, thank you! I love your ”small touches of quirky with bold messiness”, that’s awesome haha Yes, it kind be had to blend different styles together (I have the same issue decorating my home!) but as long as there is one common thing to unify it all, then it usually works 🙂 Let me know if there is anything in particular you’d like to see or learn in the book, I welcome comments and suggestions 🙂

  7. Beautiful page and I love the colors! 🙂 Happy Birthday!!!
