Studio Time 12 – ”Which way to go?” (intuitive art journaling)

Making it up as you go along: intuitive art journaling

Like me, you may not always know what to paint or draw or create… All you know at that particular moment is that you want to ”do something”, you NEED to do something creative…

Believe me, if you just stare at your blank page telling yourself: I don’t know what to do, I don’t know where to start, I’m not feeling inspired, maybe I should go eat that slice of cake instead (ok maybe that’s just me), this sucks… And on and on, you know what I’m talking about! I get those times too but one thing I know for sure is that if you don’t start somewhere then you will go nowhere 😉

I was feeling a bit hyper and a bit worked up so I decided to do a little bit of ‘intuitive art journaling’ as I like to call it. You probably would call it ‘the poor girl has no idea what she’s doing journaling’ but that’s ok haha

The main thing is to create something and it doesn’t matter what it is. Stop focussing on the results constantly, appreciate that the process is just as important!

So, from nowhere, slowly, I ended up somewhere. And I was very happy with where I had landed so, next time you feel like you are in ‘nowhere-land’, do as I do and JUST. START! You will soon realise that inspiration will slowly come to you 🙂

Let me know if this video tutorial inspires you to add a quote in an art journal and what you think of how I mixed words with other elements and mediums to create a cohesive and pretty page – leave me a comment below!

Mimi.
PS: I added little white highlights on the leaves with a white gel pen (not seen on the video).

  1. Loved watching your youtube video just now. You didn’t have anything in mind when you began…I work that way too…but you certainly helped me to see things a bit differently for next time I get the paints out. Loved watching.

Thanks Chris! I work a lot better this way and it’s nice to not have any pressure to go in a particular direction, and to know you can change direction at any point ?

  2. Your videos were recommended on a facebook group that I just joined ‘Art Journaling for Beginners’ … I’ve watched 2 of your videos so far and I really love your sense of humor (you make me chuckle as I watch you create) and how you share your creativity (when I see you work on a page, I think you must be done, but you just keep on going and going and going LOL! The results are always fabulous in the end and I love the different tools you use (a pop bottle cap and a roll of toilet paper! wow!. I really like what you said, ‘just pick up something and start!’ … I do that but I’m thinking, I need to keep on going and going a bit further to push my limits 😉 … Thanks for the videos!!!

Hi Cynthia! Thanks for popping by 🙂 So good to hear I am getting recommended lol You know I used to be a lot less adventurous and when I started painting, I would pretty much do just one layer and be done with it. But eventually, I felt I could do better than that so now I just keep pushing a little, just a little more. It takes practice so go at your own pace but in the end, as I always tell everyone, if it doesn’t work out, just paint over it 🙂 If you are interested in highly detailed tutorials for beginners, my new mixed media book has just been released for pre-sale (with discounted pricing) and it is also available as a video e-course. You can find out more here: http://mimibondi.com/beginner-mixed-media-book-videos. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, I love to help! Take care, mimi

    • Your book looks interesting … Are you able to post a few pictures of the first few pages including the front table of contents? … like they do on amazon.ca (look inside) option?

Hi Cynthia! I joined the facebook group you mentioned, I wasn’t aware of it before so thank you 🙂 The book will available on Amazon later on (at the normal RRP) and will have a ”look inside” option but until then, I have better than that 😉 The photo here http://mimibondi.com/art/no-shenanigans-learn-mixed-media-book shows you what 90% of the book is like (ie detailed photos on one side and corresponding detailed instructions on the other)… and here is a video detailing everything you are going to create: https://youtu.be/Pgqn7b-WGQY – I can’t make it any more explicit hahaha The book is only about useful information and highly detailed tutorials to turn you into a mixed media artist in a flash 🙂 If you prefer video instructions then the ecourse has 10 hours of HD video content and is available immediately here: http://mimibondi.com/art/no-shenanigans-mixed-media-course. Many thanks, mimi

  3. I am so glad I found you!! I have just spent the last hour admiring your artwork. I am about to watch your videos and I know I will be greatly inspired. I love your colors, your focal points (birds, houses, the sun, everything) in the Rays of Sunshine. I love your doodling and how you bring the piece together. Can you tell I am just thrilled right now. Thank you.
