Summer is Back! Mixed media art tag tutorial
Yes, summer is back in Australia and is now in full strength! It’s so hot I’m almost looking forward to winter… Ok, I said ”almost” 😉
Let’s start by making the easiest background ever: add a few drops of paint in 2 colours and smooch them around with your fingers. Told you that was easy! Once that was nice and dry, I used some of my hand carved stamps to add texture (you can learn to make your own in my Stamp Carving Amazing workshop here).
I then added a little more colour with my finger (not trying to do anything difficult here) then created subtle texture with gold ink and an abstract stamp design. Stamped flowers in white ink helped add even more subtle interest and tone down parts of the art tag…
I played around with the placement of my die cuts to know roughly how they would look in the end… And did a little more stamping and stencilling in the background. I really wanted to incorporate these fun watercolour ice cream die cuts so I cut the white border out with scissors so they could blend into my background more seamlessly. The designs are all so beautiful I had trouble choosing but I ended up with 3 different ice cream cones. What better way to illustrate summer than ice cream?!
Before gluing them I inked the edges of the die cuts (and shipping tag) in black then used gel medium to ensure they would not go anywhere 😉
I added the words ‘Summer is Back‘ with a blue Tombow marker then went over it with a white sharpie marker.
And finally, for the ”piece de resistance”… I added some of that gorgeous Opal Dust I love so much! And there you have it 🙂
Watch the video tutorial below and let me know your thoughts on this with a comment below (scroll down to the bottom of the page) as I always love to hear from you!
And remember, this is a quick tutorial to share my process with you, this is not how I teach! If you’d like to learn mixed media with me, all my workshops (and books) are highly detailed so you never have to wonder what is going on 😉
With love and sunshine,
